Repurposed Roses
Recycled fabric and cotton thread, Summer 2019
This piece began as a dress with a very dated cut and shape. I found the dress while looking for clothing at goodwill to repurpose the fabric. I do this for two reasons, recycling old clothing is a great way to help the environment, plus it is also much more economical than purchasing new fabric for each new project. I was drawn to the print on the fabric, even though the original dress pattern was cut at an angle that made the print look dated. To make this shirt, I began with sketching out the design I wanted. I went with a flowy summer look to compliment the season. I then used my seam ripper to take apart the dress. I next draped the original skirt lining on myself, to act as the main body of the top. I marked, cut, and sewed a dart into the back of the dress to give it a semi-fitted look. I repeated this process with the fashion fabric and then sewed them together. Next, I used the front and back bodice pieces to create the sleaves. I wanted them to be as light and airy as possible, so I did not use a lining. I created the sleeves by wrapping the fabric around my arm, then doubling that length. I used the wide shoulder straps of the dress to create the slender straps for the top. I then used my hemming foot to give the edges a nice, professional look and feel.
